Why isn't the NFL Network available everywhere?

The NFL is making a mistake in not having The NFL Network on cable. The NFL network carries games on Thursdays and Saturdays that people are not able to watch. I understand that they want money to put the channel on cable, but essentially the network is a promotion tool for the most watched sports league in America. Shouldn’t they want their “commercials” shown to the most people possible? I am not an advertising guru or anything like that but why would you not want the NFL network available to every house in America?

They are showing the 2009 Schedule today at 2:00 and half of the country will have to tune in to ESPN at 6:00 to get the updated schedule. If it could be watched live more people would be watching the NFL Network Commercials instead of ESPN commercial. I just don’t understand their reasoning for not having it broadcast to every house possible. I think that Roger Goddell is doing a great job, but this is one of his mistakes so far.

Why isn't the NFL Network available everywhere?

I realize that this is an old post and things change quickly, but I have been in Ontario, Canada for the last while and we get NFL Network up here.

I'm not sure where you are but we've also gotten it in GA, TX, Upstate NY & NM.

But granted, it should be in every basic cable package accross North America.

Why isn't the NFL Network available everywhere?

The NFL is like any other business and money talks.Directv has the contract so you have to have directv in order to get games. It should be for everyone but its not.Money goes a long ways in any business. Its a shame because there were alot of great matchups.

Why isn't the NFL Network available everywhere?

I use to wish it was on cable, but with my 1080p 52 inch, why do I even care about Cable companies. I can't get but maybe 2 HD channels from them at almost the same price of 100+ HD channels from Direct TV. The Cable co. wants a premium package to gouge me for football games, nothing even puts them in HD for the Cable co.

I'm not sure why this is even an arguement anymore, considering next year everything is going digital. Direct TV already is. With the Cable co. requiring additional fee's for digital cable now, what are they going to do with the basic services they over become obsolete. Anyone care to guess where the next Cable co. rate hike is coming from, even though they already have digital service. They should just take the NFL offer, in my opinion, and quit trying to make a premium package cost to stick us with. I believe if they don't they are going to price themselves out of the market for a lucrative deal.

Why isn't the NFL Network available everywhere?

Fact is, ESPN gets paid by cable companies for their service, why shouldn't the NFL network?

Also, this doesn't affect the teams local market, as local TV stations have contracts to show every game as long as the game is not blacked out in the local market due to ticket sales.

It only affects fans who do not live in their local market. So what is the issue here? I am a Dallas fan, and was in the Navy for 20 years...until DirecTV came along, I missed several Dallas games. (Granted not near as many as my buddy who is a Bengal fan!!)

This gets even worse if you actually live in another NFL local market and they have a 1pm game.. most local stations have their own NFL show after the 1pm games and do not show the 2nd game of the doubleheader.

Why isn't the NFL Network available everywhere?

I think it's because the cable companys want everyone on a dish of some sort. ask this, why did dish network get the MLB package in 2006 and only direct t.v. got it in 2007?

Why isn't the NFL Network available everywhere?

Here's the latest from AP on the CBS. Sportline NFL page.

NEW YORK
; -- NFL Network filed its complaint Tuesday with the Federal Communications Commission against cable TV giant Comcast.

The network announced April 17 that it had served Comcast with the required notice of its intent to file a complaint. NFL Network is accusing the nation's largest cable operator of discriminatory and anticompetitive treatment in violation of the Cable Act of 1992.

The two sides have been feuding over Comcast's decision to place NFL Network on a premium sports tier that customers must pay extra to receive. NFL Network contends in the complaint that Comcast is engaging in discriminatory and anticompetitive conduct because it includes less-popular national sports channels it owns, Versus and Golf Channel, on a basic tier.
